DIY wall-mounted bud vases

September 15, 2020 in Interior by Brenda Hernandez

Who doesn’t love a good DIY home decor tutorial? Especially one that’s easy and perfect for beginners, like the wall-mounted bud vases that we built for our sunroom.

You could say that the sunroom is our favorite room in the house, mostly because it has three walls of windows, letting in lots of natural light and giving views of the wooded backyard. It’s so peaceful to sit in there and relax. When we first bought our house, it was actually the sunroom that sold us on the house’s potential! Now, we just think of it as a book-reading and coffee-drinking oasis.

To go with the natural feel of the room, we wanted to incorporate a floral element into the decor. Truth be told, we were inspired by some scrap wood that the previous owners left behind in our basement. The wood was in great condition, and already stained a dark walnut color, which matched the wooden beams and planked ceiling in the sunroom perfectly. Also, we had these cute glass bud vases leftover from my childhood bedroom (that sadly never made it on the wall). Ours are from Pottery Barn Teen and are no longer sold, but these ones are similar. We looked at the bud vases and the scrap wood and thought, why not combine them to make something pretty?

And because we were using items that we already had on hand (yay for free materials), we only needed to buy the faux flower stems to fill the vases with, and the mounting hardware. If artificial stems aren’t your thing, you can use real flowers or clippings from the yard instead. In our minds, faux flowers = zero maintenance.

Here’s what you’ll need to make our DIY wall-mounted bud vases:

Materials

  • one piece of 1×6 pine board
  • saw (or ask the store cut the board to size for you)
  • sandpaper
  • clean cloth
  • wood stain (ours is dark walnut)
  • drill
  • screws
  • screwdriver
  • mounting hardware
  • hammer
  • bud vases (such as these)
  • flowers

How-to

  1. First, use your saw to cut your pine board to your desired length. Ours are 20 inches long.
  2. Sand the pine boards so they’re nice and smooth. Wipe off sandpaper dust using a damp cloth.
  3. Using a clean, dry cloth: apply wood stain and let dry. Apply a second coat of stain if desired.
  4. Drill pilot holes in the wood board for your screws.
  5. Attach the bud vases to the pine boards using screws and a screwdriver.
  6. Nail in the mounting hardware.
  7. Hang and decorate!

We hung the bud vases at eye level on both sides of the big curved window in the sunroom (which is the prettiest feature of the room, so we definitely wanted to highlight it!) The flowers give a nice pop of color to the neutral colored walls, and the dark wood ties in with the wood ceiling & beams.

Just like that, our first DIY home decor project is finished. How easy was that?? In our case, we were thrilled to use up some of our old scrap wood, and to (finally!) give the old-but-new bud vases a home. When starting a new project, it’s always worth the extra effort to see what you have on hand before buying new. All the sunroom needs now is a cozy chair in the corner!
